Evolution of Cats (and How it Affects your Cat’s Diet)

From Wild Hunters to House Cats: My Evolutionary Journey (As Told By Me, Obviously)

Listen, human. Before becoming a rent-free couch potato living my best life in your apartment, I come from a family of apex predators. Let me tell you how I went from wilderness warrior to professional nap-taker.

My Origin Story (I Chose You, Remember That)

Picture this: 10,000 years ago in the Middle East. You humans figured out farming and started storing grain. This attracted rodents. My wildcat ancestors saw an opportunity and thought, “Easy hunting? Low effort meals? We’re in.

We made the decision to live with you. The wildcats who didn’t mind humans had more food and safer lives. Over thousands of years, they became today’s house cats. We basically domesticated ourselves.

Then Ancient Egypt happened. Humans there really got us. They considered us sacred animals, connected us with their goddess Bastet, and showed us deep respect. It felt right.

We then conquered the world on merchant ships as professional mouse hunters and every continent wanted us.

You May Be Feeding Me Wrong (And We Need to Fix This)

Here’s my issue with modern living: You expect me to adapt to your lifestyle while ignoring 10,000 years of my biological design.

Indoor cats have only been a thing for 60 to 70 years. Before that? We lived outdoors, hunting actual prey, eating high protein, low carb meals multiple times daily. My digestive system is meant for MEAT, fresh, animal based protein.

Now you’re trying to feed me kibble filled with corn, wheat, and mysterious “by products”? My ancestors hunted RABBITS, not rice, and FISH, not fillers. I’m an obligate carnivore. That’s not a preference, it’s a biological requirement.

What I Actually Need From You

If you want me healthy and thriving, respect my evolutionary blueprint:

Species appropriate nutrition: High protein, meat based food that mirrors what my wildcat ancestors ate

Mental enrichment: I still have hunting instincts even if the only thing I’m stalking is your ankle

Understanding my schedule: I’m wired for dawn and dusk activity, so those early morning concerts are non negotiable

Territory respect: Scratching, climbing, and surveying my domain aren’t bad behavior, they’re essential

My DNA hasn’t changed significantly in millennia. I still need animal proteins, taurine, and amino acids from meat. My body processes animal based nutrition the way nature designed.
